Residue From Tape Ins and Why Some Clients Might Have More Then Others

Dealing with sticky residue at a maintenance appointment can be frustrating! Especially if you have a client coming after them and start to worry about timing and maintaining the quality of your clients natural hair. Plus you never want your client to feel any discomfort while getting extensions. It can be a sticky situation!
We totally get it and that's why we came out with tools to help. We have three types of tapes to choose from and have two removers you can use as a duo to help with the removal process. With these tools it makes the process a lot easier but there are other steps you can take to prevent sticky residue both during application and to tell your clients to avoid/do at home.
So it all starts at your consultation. When you ask what kind of lifestyle your client lives its important to know because it will give you a better indication of what your clients extensions will look like when they come back. If your client is a swimmer or goes into a sauna a lot this could give you an indication that your client may come back with residue, maybe even some slippage and movement.
You also want to go over how your client styles their hair. Be sure to tell them to never put a hot tool directly on the top of the tape in where the tapes are bonded together. This is going to cause damage to your clients natural hair because the tape is heated up and the cuticle of the natural hair opens. The tape starts to penetrate into the cuticle causing residue that is hard to get out and can lead to breakage. Same goes for blow drying the top and root area turn the heat down as much as possible.
Products used on the hair should be applied below the tape too. If you take a roll of scotch tape and get oil on it it wont be sticky anymore same goes for your extensions tape it will gradually break down and slip.
These are things to remind your client at every appointment because sometimes people forget. Another way to prevent damage and sticky residue is choosing the correct tape to use on your clients hair. Like I said before there are three types of tape we offer:Re-Tape tabs, EZ tabs, and single sided tapes.
EZ Tabs-
  • 6-8 weeks of hold
  • Sweat proof
  • Great for all hair types,
  • Double-sided
  • Especially fine/fragile hair
  • No residue
  • Secure adhesive with easy,
  • 100% Vegan, cruelty-free
Re-Tape Tabs
  • 6-8 weeks of hold
  • Great for all hair type
  • Little to no residue
  • Strong, secure adhesive
  • Sweat proof
  • Double-sided

Single sided
  • 6-8 weeks of hold

If you have a client with fine hair and is coming back with a lot of residue they would be a great candidate for EZ tabs because there is no residue.Re-tape  tabs will have some residue but is very strong tape. Single sided tape is great for clients who have fine hair or you don’t want to put as much weight on the hair. It’s also great to hide bulk especially around the top and front of the head.
Choosing a tape that best suits your client will not only elevate your service but also create a faster removal process and help maintain the integrity of your clients hair. During your removal you will want to make sure you have the proper tools needed for a successful removal.

You will need:
  • Express remover
  • Glide remover
  • A rat tale comb I prefer metal
  • Aqua Prep shampoo
  • Enough time
Never rush the removal but these tools do help speed the process up. You will start by spraying the Express remover in each tape and letting it soak in while you begin removing the other tapes. The express remover is alcohol based and will break down the tape so it separates from your hair. Slide the tail end of your comb in the center of the tapes and slide it back and forth from right to left. This will separate the tapes and you should be able to slide them out.
Be sure to place the extensions you take out in a safe spot where the tapes wont attach to other hair. Then comb through the section you just removed from. It is normal for there to be some hair shed that was stuck in the bond. On average everyone loses about 100 strands of hair a day. The tape will hold those strands until you take them out.
After you remove all of the tapes go through and check for residue it will be sticky and maybe a few tangles. If you have some you can spray the glide remover in the hair and comb through it gently this is a oil based remover so the hair will be oily. This will get rid of any extra residue though. After you are done with removal you can use the prep shampoo three times to prep the hair for a fresh new install.
